The first quarter of this year saw several unveilings of exciting flagships, but some companies didn’t rush to reveal premium smartphones during CES or MWC. One of them is Motorola, which is working on a successor to last year’s Moto Z flagship.

A tweet by Evan Blass says that this year’s Motorola flagship will be called the Moto Z2, as the logo reveals. The successor to last year’s Moto Z is expected to retain the connector pins on the back panel, thus allowing the phone to be compatible with the many Moto Mods modular accessories.

Moto Z, Moto Z Force and Moto Z Play are paired with Moto Mods using magnets and 16 pins that allow modular accessories to quickly connect to the phone and enhance functionality, without requiring the device to reboot.

Presumably, Moto Z2 will be launched together with new Moto Mods, and perhaps one of the models includes Alexa virtual assistant. Speaking of accessories, Motorola recently teased the return of the RAZR as a Moto Mod.

Moto Z2 could be made available at multiple US carriers

Motorola indirectly confirmed that a successor to the Moto Z would come this year, when the company announced its intention to develop Moto Mods for at least three more years. The company also revealed that it might make Moto Z sequels available at other US carriers, besides Verizon. The Moto Z Droid, Moto Z Force Droid and Moto Z Play Droid are currently exclusive at Verizon.

Last year’s Moto Z and Moto Z Force were launched in September, while Moto Z2 successor could be announced this June at the earliest. Until then, Motorola is also working on the Moto X (2017).

Moto Z2 will most likely pack the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 platform coupled with 4GB of RAM, if Motorola doesn’t decide to surprise us all and up RAM capacity to 6GB. One of Moto Z’s highlights is its slim body making it the “world’s thinnest premium smartphone,” according to Motorola.
