Moto G5 Plus vs Moto G4 Plus: Should You Upgrade?

Soon after the Moto G4 Plus was unveiled last year, it became one of the most popular phablets on the market thanks to its low price and solid features. One year after the release of the Moto G4 Plus, Lenovo is back with a sequel aimed at different audiences.

The Moto G5 Plus does away with the large display and features a much smaller 5.2-inch panel. Despite the fact that it comes with a smaller screen, the new Moto G5 Plus weighs the same as the previous model, though it's a little bit smaller and much thinner.

As expected, Lenovo updated the chipset inside its mid-range Motorola smartphones lineup, but the amount of memory is so varied that it's not worth comparing. The bottom line is that customers will be able to find the Moto G5 Plus with either 2GB, 3GB or 4GB RAM, as well as 32GB or 64GB storage.

The Moto G4 Plus has a similar amount of RAM, but the cheapest model starts at 16GB internal memory and goes up to 64GB.

Another major difference between the two smartphones is the rear-facing camera. It looks like Lenovo has focused on quality rather than the number of megapixels, so a 12-megapixel camera now replaces the 16-megapixel one on the Moto G4 Plus.

No changes have been made in the front, so you'll find the same 5-megapixel camera and the fingerprint sensor housed by the physical Home button. A similar 3,000 mAh non-removable battery powers both Motorola smartphones.

Design-wise, the two smartphones are pretty much different. The square-shaped Home button on the Moto G4 Plus has been replaced by an oval-shaped button on the new Moto G5 Plus.

The Moto G5 features a circular camera on the back, whereas the previous model has a much simpler configuration. The form factor of the phones is slightly different as well, as seen in the pictures.
