modu announced recently the launch of its modu phone and modu jackets on the Israel market. The company, which is also known for the release of one of the lightest handsets available, will make the full commercial launch of the device later this year along with Cellcom Israel. In addition, it also announced that the modu phone would become available for purchase in Europe, Southeast Asia and South America before the year's end.
The initial launch will be a limited one, and Cellcom Israel's subscribers will be able to purchase only a few modu phones.
The handset comes in a modu kit and sports a price tag of $125.00, being available for acquisition through Cellcom Israel’s online store and calling centers. The company announced that customers would have the opportunity to choose one modu express jacket from a wide range of flavors, and that they would also receive a carrying modu pouch for the handset, all for free.
“The initial launch is a milestone in
modu's development. The decision to introduce modu in our home country of Israel and specifically with Cellcom Israel, the largest cellular operator in Israel is of great significance to us. The launch in Israel is the first among others planned for later this year in other countries,” stated Dov Moran, CEO and founder of modu. Amos Shapira, CEO of Cellcom Israel, commented: “modu is an innovative concept which revolves around a unique cellphone, allowing consumers to customize it for their needs, uses and life styles.”
The modu phone, we must admit, seems a rather interesting device, and its design might be attractive, though it looks rather old. The handset was unveiled for the first time at the MWC 2008 show, and a lot of time passed until it actually became available for purchase, so it might not see the same traction on the market as a year and a half ago. Even so, it will be an 'exotic' presence, and that might attract users on its side in the end.
