Moritz Bunkus, the creator of the popular, open-source, free, and cross-platform MKVToolNix MKV (Matroska) manipulation tool, announced the other day the release of the MKVToolNix 9.7 stable series.

Dubbed "Numbers," MKVToolNix 9.7.0 comes less than a month after the release of MKVToolNix 9.6.0 "Slave To Your Mind" stable branch, and promises to be a major update that adds lots of enhancements to the graphical user interface (GUI), but also deprecates several options and features that'll be removed at the start of 2018.

"Note that this release deprecates the options (e.g. '--identify-verbose') and features. These are scheduled to be removed early in 2018," said Moritz Bunkus in the release notes. "There were a lot of enhancements to the GUI all over the place, several bug fixes in mkvmerge, a couple of enhancements there, too."

GCC 4.9.x, Clang 3.4, and Qt 5.3.x or later are now required

As with any new major version of a software product, various requirements have been bumped to new versions. As such, starting with the 9.7 series, to compile MKVToolNix on your operating system, you'll need either GCC 4.9.x or Clang 3.4 or later, as well as the Qt 5.3.x GUI toolkit.

As for the improvements implemented in MKVToolNix 9.7, we can notice many changes to the MKVToolNix GUI, as noted before, as well as a couple of enhancements to the mkvmerge and mkvextract components. We recommend studying the full changelog attached at the end of the article if you're curious to know what exactly was changed.

A few hours after releasing the MKVToolNix 9.7.0 series, Moritz Bunkus announced the general availability of the first point release, MKVToolNix 9.7.1 "Pandemonium," which is a hotfix build for the 9.7.0 build. You can now download MKVToolNix 9.7.1 for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windows operating systems from our website.
