Version 8.5.0 of the popular, open-source, free, and cross-platform MKVToolNix project, which is graphical software that helps users manipulate MKV (Matroska) files, has been announced by Moritz Bunkus.

MKVToolNix 8.5.0 introduces a bunch of new features, especially to the GUI (Graphical User Interface) but also for the mkvmerge tool and other components of the project. As usual, the new maintenance release addresses many of those issues reported by users since the previous version of the software.

Among the most interesting changes brought about by MKVToolNix 8.5.0, we can mention support for remembering the folder where the last file was dropped through the GUI as the last opened directory, as well as support for nanosecond precision timing to the start and end timestamps of the Chapter Editor.

Additionally, there's now a new column in the merge tool that can track a list containing the state of the "forced track" flag, users can remove selected entries from the merge tool's attachments list by pressing the delete key, and it is now possible to reset the error and warning counters of all jobs in the new job queue feature.

"I’ve released MKVToolNix v8.5.0. It contains the usual mix of bug fixes and enhancements, most of them for the GUI but some for mkvmerge, too. Most of these correspond directly to entries in the issue tracker," says Moritz Bunkus. "There’s one small change for package maintainers: there’s a new translation of the man pages into Catalan."

mkvmerge has received various enhancements too

The mkvmerge tool of MKVToolNix, which lets users merge MKV (Matroska) files, has received various enhancements too, among which we can mention better identification output for DTS 96/24, PCM tracks improvements, and support for reading the segment UID of an existing MKV file.

Last but not least, mkvmerge can now derive basic audio parameters of AC3 and MP3 tracks through the verbose identification for MP4 files.
