The developers of the MKVToolnix open-source and cross-platform application used for manipulating MKV (Matroska) files on GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems have recently announced that MKVToolnix 8.2.0 is available for download and that all users of MKVToolnix 8.0.0 or 8.1.0 must upgrade immediately.

The changelog of MKVToolnix 8.2.0 is huge and contains detailed information about the new features, bugfixes and performance improvements implemented in the software. As we reported during the launch of MKVToolnix 8.0.0 exactly one month ago, on June 21, 2015, the application received a new graphical user interface (GUI).

At that point in time, it was mentioned that MKVToolnix 8.0.0 contained the old user interface as well, which is called mkvmerge GUI and which apparently is still distributed as part of MKVToolnix 8.1.0 and today's MKVToolnix 8.2.0 maintenance release. However, the next point release, MKVToolnix 8.3.0, will remove it, so users who still have MKVToolnix 8.0.0 or MKVToolnix 8.1.0 installed must upgrade to MKVToolnix 8.2.0 as soon as possible.

"This is another release implementing a lot of enhancements and new features for MKVToolNix GUI. Nearly all of them are a direct result of all the feedback received for versions 8.0.0 and 8.1.0. Therefore I urge you to upgrade, especially if you’re still using 8.0.0. The old GUI (mkvmerge GUI) is still included and scheduled to be removed after 8.3.0," says Moritz Bunkus.

MKVToolnix 8.3.0 to be released next month

Since MKVToolnix has monthly updates, we should expect the MKVToolnix 8.3.0 maintenance release to arrive sometime at the end of August 2015. Until then, you can download MKVToolnix 8.2.0 for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems right now from Softpedia. We recommend inspecting the changelog attached below if you are curious to know what's new in this release.
