Video game developer Mojang, publisher Microsoft, and the team working on the Oculus Rift virtual reality device are announcing that the new Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition will arrive on the new platform at some point in the spring, offering an entirely new take on the classic gameplay of the series.

Both Creative and Survival mode will be featured in the new version of the title, and gamers will be able to choose when they want to play alone or with friends in order to create complex worlds and to then explore them at will.

The Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition beta version is now live, and gamers can download it in order to try out the unique mechanics of the title and to deliver important feedback to the company so that it can improve the experience before full launch.

The attached video offers some more details about the way Microsoft aims to link the now-classic indie title with virtual reality.

At the moment, the Oculus Rift does not have an official launch date, and it's unclear whether the coming installment of Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition will get updates and new content at the same rate as the core version for the new OS.

Virtual reality might have a content problem on launch

The Oculus Rift is the platform that brought the concept back into the attention of gamers, getting successfully funded on Kickstarter before the company got acquired by Facebook.

The development team aims to offer a virtual reality solution that manages to immerse the player into a wide range of experiences without any sort of downsides like nausea or long-term fatigue.

The Oculus Rift does not have a clear price, although it seems gamers who want to pick up one and make sure that their PC is solid enough to run VR experiences will have to pay around 1,000 dollars or Euro.

Rival initiatives like the Vive, which is created by HTC and Valve, and the new PlayStation VR, formerly Project Morpheus, for the PlayStation 4, also currently lack a clear launch date as well as information about initial software support and final price.

Microsoft is also creating its own HoloLens augmented reality device, which is also designed to support MInecraft in interesting ways.
