“You made it about you” and that’s not “nice”

In July, the nominees for the MTV Video Music Awards 2015 were announced and Nicki Minaj was very unhappy that her “Anaconda” didn’t get a nod for Video of the Year. She didn’t take the snub personally but rather pointed out that any other slim, white female star who had released a similar video and it had gone viral had been nominated before.

Taylor Swift thought she was talking about her, and she immediately got defensive and the whole feud turned nasty and very public really quick. Miley Cyrus, who will be hosting the VMAs 2015 this Sunday, is chiming in on the dispute, even though it’s been weeks since Nicki and Taylor kissed and made up.

Nicki Minaj is angry so her argument isn’t valid

Miley has been promoting her hosting gig all over the place this week, including in a new interview with the New York Times. Among other things, she talks about her 2013 performance with Robin Thicke, which completely changed the world’s perception on her and how, looking back, it wasn’t even as scandalous as people made it to appear.

She also discusses the Nicki - Taylor spat, dismissing Nicki’s criticism of MTV for not showing the same consideration to black artists as it did to whites, on the grounds that Nicki was “angry.”

Somewhat ironically, Miley starts off by admitting that she didn’t really follow the feud as it played out on social media, but that’s not stopping her from having an opinion.

What bothered her the most, she says, is the fact that Nicki went after Taylor Swift and got aggressive on social media. She is of the opinion that you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, so you can’t expect to receive love when you’re putting out hate.

In other words, she’s saying Nicki reaped what she sowed.

“I don’t respect your statement because of the anger that came with it. You made it about you,” Miley says. “If you want to make it about race, there’s a way you could do that. But don’t make it just about yourself. Say: ‘This is the reason why I think it’s important to be nominated. There’s girls everywhere with this body type.’ What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind. It’s not very polite. I think there’s a way you speak to people with openness and love.”

Miley knows how things stand

Because Nicki is not a nice person, she couldn’t have possibly approached the snub any other way than she did, Miley says.

Anticipating a response from Nicki (which is yet to come, by the way) about how she can’t actually have an opinion on racially-charged issues like this one, Miley says that just because she’s a white pop star doesn’t mean she’s uneducated: she knows her facts and her statistics.

On a final note, she doesn’t think that MTV “did it on purpose,” so Nicki had no good reason to get all fired up like this.
