There’s still no word on the release date, though

Windows 10 Mobile is expected to debut sometime this month, according to previous reports, but Microsoft still remains tight-lipped on any details that could provide us with at least a hint regarding the day or week when the new OS could see daylight.

But Gabriel Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, has revealed that the Windows team is currently at work putting the finishing touched to Windows 10 Mobile build 10586 before eventually releasing it to Windows Phone devices as an upgrade version.

While the fact that 10586 is the version to be shipped to Windows Phone handsets is not really breaking news, this is more or less confirmation that the release is near, especially because the latest builds seem to be running smoothly on the majority of Lumia phones.

The biggest questions right now are related to the final version number of the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade and the date when it could become available to users.

More cumulative updates

What Microsoft is doing right now is to release new cumulative updates to users participating in the Insider program in order to further improve the operating system before it’s offered to everyone else.

Aul explains in his tweet that “cumulative updates are key improvements to allow smooth upgrades,” and indeed, the company has focused specifically on enhancing the upgrade experience with the latest builds.

“Over the past few Cumulative Updates for Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 10586, we have addressed feedback we have received from Windows Insiders on the upgrade experience from Windows Phone 8.1 to Windows 10 mobile,” Aul said yesterday, when he pushed build 10586.107 to members of the slow ring.

Certainly, the whole Windows Phone community is waiting for Microsoft to start rolling out the Windows 10 Mobile upgrade, but at the same time, everyone expects the OS to perform flawlessly, so Redmond might need a few more days to get everything right.

Update: title updated to better reflect that Microsoft is now putting the final touches to build 10586 before the public release to Windows Phone devices.
