No word on the eagerly-awaited overhaul of the platform

When it started work on Windows 10, Microsoft pledged to keep all its devices in sync and deliver the same improvements and experience across PCs, tablets, and smartphones at the same time, as part of its efforts to build one Windows with just a single ecosystem and one store.

Somewhere along the way, Windows 10 Mobile was left behind, most likely because of the declining market share, which is also pushing developers and users to Android and iOS.

With work on Windows 10 Redstone 3 now going at full speed on PCs, but with focus on Windows phones decreasing, the next update for Windows 10 Mobile is going to be feature2, a new set of improvements that push the platform into maintenance mode and including only small refinements with almost no new features.

Windows 10 RS3 coming in September... to PCs

Unfortunately, Microsoft has no plans to promote Windows 10 Mobile from the feature2 branch to Redstone 3 just yet, and the company doesn't say a single word about the eagerly-anticipated phone overhaul based on CShell.

Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc explained in a message that "we have no plans to move off feature2 currently," which means that the next update for Windows phones is likely to be subtle.

Windows 10 Redstone 3 is projected to launch in September as Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, but only for PCs, and it's not yet clear if Microsoft wants to synchronize the release with the feature2 debut as well.

Sources familiar with the matter suggest that feature2 is just a maintenance update that could mark the end of the current-generation Windows phones, with the upcoming overhaul based on CShell to be entirely addressed to new hardware.

There are lots of unknown details at this point, and Microsoft doesn't say anything about its mobile plans, which obviously doesn’t do any good to the platform, as more and more users and developers are switching sides and moving to Android or iOS because there's no confirmed future for Windows phones.
