Firm confirms a second Windows 10 update is coming this year

Microsoft is now giving the finishing touches to the Windows 10 Creators Update due in April, but it’s no secret that the company is also preparing a second OS update that’s likely to see daylight in the fall.

And today we finally received the first confirmation that another Windows 10 update is due this year, with the software giant confirming at Ignite in Australia that Redstone 3 is on the table for 2017.

A slideshow presented by the firm during one of its sessions reveals that both the Creators Update and a “second update in 2017” are planned for this year, but their timing is yet to be determined, with release dates to be announced at a later time.

Windows 10 Redstone 3

Previous reports indicated that Microsoft planned to launch the Redstone 3 in the fall, as we told you recently, the target appears to be November.

Windows 10 Redstone 3 (note that Redstone is just an internal codename for now and Microsoft is likely to pick a different name for this release, just like it happened with the Creators Update whose codename is Redstone 2) could launch in November as version 1711, according to unverified information.

If this is indeed the target, then Redstone 3 could be ready in October, with insiders obviously to be the first getting it as part of the Insider program.

Shortly after the release of the Windows 10 Creators Update, which is expected to see daylight in April this year, Microsoft could ship the first builds of Redstone 3 to insiders. These builds, however, won’t include any breaking changes, but only pave the way for bigger updates that would be released at a later time, most likely during the summer.

For the moment, however, nothing is certain about Redstone 3, but at least we now know it’s coming and there’s a good chance it lands in the fall. More information should emerge in the coming weeks and months, as the Creators Update is just around the corner.
