Fonts will be moved to Settings, new downloads in the Store

We’ve known for a while that Microsoft wants to kill off the classic Control Panel and move all the configuration option to Settings, and it looks like the company is preparing to make another important step in this regard.

A future Windows 10 Redstone 4 preview build will move the Fonts section from the classic Control Panel to Settings, while new fonts will be available to download from the Microsoft Store.

All the options currently available for fonts in Control Panel will also migrate to Settings, and you’ll be able to manage all the installed fonts from a single window. Options will be include uninstalling, previews, and information for each item, like name and version.

New fonts will be published in the Microsoft Store as part of the company’s effort to make the Windows 10 store the one destination for everything. While the Store was originally the home of apps and games, it now allows users to download music, movies, Windows themes, browser extensions, and wallpapers.

The classic Control Panel going dark

Microsoft has already taken several steps to pull the plug on the Control Panel and at this point, finding it in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is not as easy as it was when the company launched the original Windows 10 version in July 2015.

The company has removed the Control Panel shortcut from the Win+X menu of the Start button, though there are alternative ways to access it, such as simply typing Control Panel in the Windows 10 Start menu.

On the other hand, with all options migrating to Settings, it’s all just a matter of time until the Control Panel goes away, though this won’t happen overnight. Windows 10 Redstone 4 is unlikely to be the pioneer of this change, but with a new Windows 10 version coming in the fall and Microsoft hard at work to move all options to Settings, it could all happen by the end of this year.
