You can get cellular data without a contract

Microsoft is working on a new way to allow Windows 10 devices to connect to the Internet even when no wireless network is available and without having a contract with a mobile carrier.

This new method relies on what’s being called the Microsoft SIM card, which “allows you to connect to a trusted nationwide mobile data network using only your Microsoft account.”

The idea is as simple as it sounds: you set up a Windows 10 device, insert a Microsoft SIM card, install the Cellular Data app, purchase the needed mobile data plan from the store, and you’re ready to connect to the Internet. No contract is needed, so “you can buy and use mobile data at your own convenience.”

At first glance, it all seems to work like the typical Internet access that we purchase during a hotel stay (with the only difference that hotels offer Wi-Fi connections). The system is very similar, as you still pay for limited-time connection, but you also need the Microsoft SIM card to be granted access to the networks.

Payment via the Windows Store

Since it works with mobile carriers, Microsoft will most likely sign deals with a number of partners, so the service will be limited to certain countries. Only domestic plans will be available at launch, which means you won’t be able to use the SIM card outside your home country, but Microsoft says that international roaming offers will be available soon.

The Cellular Data app will be tied to your Microsoft account, and different plans will be available through the Windows Store using the support payment methods.

“This is the easiest way to get online using a trusted nationwide network. Purchase a plan via Windows Store anywhere network coverage is available. The Cellular data app can get you connected at any time with a secure, high-speed mobile connection,” the description of the app reads.

There’s still no information on when this SIM card will become available or the countries to be supported at launch, but expect Microsoft to announce the project in the coming weeks.
