Get ready for another busy Patch Tuesday this month

Microsoft will kick off this month’s Patch Tuesday cycle tomorrow, and for most users, the most important part is the rollout of new cumulative updates for Windows 10.

As it happens every month, the cumulative updates that land on Patch Tuesday come with both security and non-security improvements, so users will be recommended to install them as soon as possible.

This is the result of the updates bringing security fixes, though as we learned the hard way, installing cumulative updates the moment they are released isn’t always the best thing to do.

Additionally, Microsoft will also ship security updates for Windows 7 and 8.1, and vulnerabilities would be resolved in other products too, including Microsoft Office.

Windows 10 October 2018 Update

Without a doubt, however, all eyes will be on the October 2018 Update, whose rollout is going through some pretty difficult moments right now.

Originally released on Tuesday as a manual download via Windows Update, Windows 10 October 2018 Update was eventually pulled by Microsoft after finding critical bugs leading to loss of data on a number of upgraded devices.

Very little was said on what causes the bug and what devices are affected, but Microsoft says it is currently investigating the problem and would resume the rollout when a fix is ready.

On Tuesday, however, Microsoft may begin the automatic rollout to computers where the issue won’t occur, with more sets of devices to receive the October 2018 Update as the testing advances. This means its own Surface devices could get the update in the coming days and weeks, most likely ahead of PCs from other manufacturers.

As far as the manual download option is concerned, it remains to be seen if Microsoft has already determined the culprit of the file removal bug. But if it did, a cumulative update landing tomorrow could address it and deliver more fixes for systems who already installed the new OS version.
