Redmond says internal testing is now underway

Microsoft announced last year that it would add extension support to its new Edge browser included in Windows 10, but this feature is yet to arrive, so everyone’s now looking at the Redstone update as the likely moment to get it.

In a techy post discussing the improvements that Edge browser could get in 2016, Microsoft also details the work it’s been doing on extensions, explaining that internal testing is underway right now and the Windows 10 Redstone preview builds that are released via the Insider program should come with an early version soon.

“Last year, we announced our intent to deliver a new extension platform for Microsoft Edge to replace the often unreliable and insecure native add-ons of the past. Extensions are among the most requested features for Microsoft Edge and we’re building an extension platform powered by web technologies and familiar to developers. Any browser extensibility is a potential vector for malicious software, and our extensions will be vetted, delivered, and managed through the Windows Store,” Microsoft says.

No specifics on when we’ll get them

And yet, the uncertainty remains, as Microsoft still doesn’t want to provide any specifics on when extensions could actually make their debut in Windows 10 Redstone builds.

“Our implementation is underway and we look forward to sharing early examples soon via the Windows Insider Program. We will share more information on developing and publishing your own extensions at a later date,” the company continues.

The reason Redmond doesn’t want to release more information on the debut date of this feature is that it’s still working on it, so any major bug that the company could discover at the very last minute could lead to a delay that would only create more frustration in the community.

For the moment, Edge extensions are still in the works, but it’s very clear that we’re getting there, and Microsoft is advancing with the development process. If everything works fine, extensions should be here for everybody in the summer.
