Microsoft will remove its official FM Radio app from Windows 10 Mobile, requiring users to download third-party alternatives from the store in order to continue listening to their favorite stations.

The news has been confirmed by a company engineer, who explained that the application is currently being discontinued, so when the Anniversary Update hits the shelves in the summer, Microsoft’s FM Radio app should no longer be available on updated devices.

“FM Radio has been removed from dev branch builds and is being cut. May use third party radio apps from store,” Microsoft program manager Jason said on Twitter.

Seeing the FM Radio app removed from Windows 10 Mobile isn’t surprising at all, as Microsoft previously launched the Lumia 950, one of its new flagship devices, without this app installed on the device. Furthermore, it removed it completely from the Lumia 950 XL when users registered to receive Insider Preview builds, so it was very clear that the FM Radio app was no longer part of its plans.

Many alternatives in the store

Indeed, the Windows Store holds several worthy alternatives to the default FM Radio app on Windows 10 Mobile, but without a doubt, the most successful are those that require an Internet connection and which provide access to large databases of radio stations.

TuneIn Radio is currently the top choice for mobile users across the world and what’s more, it’s also available on Windows 10 PCs, so you can experience the same look and feeling no matter your device.

The Anniversary Update is projected to land in July, when Microsoft will bring many other improvements to users on Windows 10, no matter if they own a PC or a mobile device. For example, Edge browser will finally receive support for extensions, with Microsoft giving hints that the very same feature might also be in the works to arrive on mobile phones as well.
