The new Skype version of iPhone and Android has been severely criticized by users out there, with the app’s rating in Apple’s App Store falling dramatically after rolling out the latest update.

But as far as Microsoft is concerned, the new Skype, which is more of an instant messaging app and less of a VoIP client, although it retains its top voice and calling capabilities, can only get better, and the firm is asking users to help it “build the next generation of Skype together.”

In a blog post published today, Microsoft explains that “we’ve been listening, updating, and responding to your feedback,” and this is why Skype is already getting the first batch of improvements, including ability to delete contacts and conversations, multi-task while in calls, and other tweaks for notifications.

“But our mission doesn’t stop there. We’ll continue to make improvements—including new features and functions—over the coming months,” Microsoft says.

New features on iOS and Android

Additionally, Microsoft is also bringing new capabilities on Android and iOS, with devices now benefitting from native sharing, which makes it possible to share content to Skype chats from other apps and services.

Microsoft seems to embrace a strategy similar to what it does with Windows 10, as the operating system is developed and improved with help from users participating in the Windows Insider program. While no special account is needed for Skype, the company emphasizes that it does listen to feedback and future updates will address the criticism the app receives.

“The goal for this next generation of Skype is to bring the people in your world closer together than ever before, and we know – especially with your help – it’ll continue getting better and better,” it says.

It remains to be seen how Skype’s rating is improving in the app stores following these updates, but users still don’t seem to be pleased, particularly with the new UI of the app.
