The notification shows up every half hour, some claim

Microsoft is often considered way too aggressive in its attempt to promote certain Windows 10 features or apps, and as it turns out, the company is doing the same thing again with push notifications.

Users on reddit are complaining that Windows 10 sends a notification to “Link your Phone and PC” every half hour, despite the message being repeatedly dismissed by the system administrator.

While I personally received this message several times in the last few days, I didn’t believe this was a widespread problem until today when more users seem to be seeing the same behavior. A report from WR indicates that there’s a chance these notifications show up more frequently on Windows 10 Enterprise rather than on Windows 10 Home. I am running Windows 10 Pro though.

As it’s the case with messages and “tips” sent by Windows 10, users can block this behavior from the Settings app > Personalization > Start > Occasionally show suggestions in Start.

Linking phones and PCs

As for the feature that Microsoft is pushing for so hard, linking phones and PCs does come with several benefits, especially because the company has invested into sync features for Android, iPhone, and Windows 10 devices after the demise of Windows phones.

With this feature, users can easily share links from phones and PCs and continue browsing from where they left off on the other device. This feature comes in handy especially for users who want seamless experience when leaving the office.

Microsoft is also working on further functionality that could be offered on linked devices, including a universal clipboard that could bring the ability to copy and paste content from the PC to a phone and the other way around. The Redstone 5 update due in the fall could come with features.

It remains to be seen if this aggressive notification behavior continues, but for the time being, it’s pretty clear that it can’t lead to anything else than criticism.
