With Windows 10 almost here, Microsoft is starting a global advertising campaign for the operating system that’s supposed to convince more people to give it a try and upgrade their computers, especially because this is the first Windows version that previous customers can get at no cost.

Today, Redmond rolled out the first video of what seems to be a longer series supposed to show the “10 reasons to upgrade to Windows 10,” and today this reason is the familiarity of the desktop.

Things such as the Start menu and live tiles are highlighted in this video, alongside the “desktop you know and love,” as Microsoft describes it.

Big bet on the desktop

Microsoft is indeed betting big on the new Windows 10 desktop, not only because it brought back the Start menu, but also thanks to other features that are finally available in the operating system, including Cortana and multiple desktops.

But there’s still no doubt that the Start menu is the big star of the show and the way Microsoft promotes it is living proof that the company acknowledged the mistakes it made in Windows 8 when it removed this feature from the operating system.

Windows 8 came not only without a Start menu, but also without a Start button, so now that they’re both back on the desktop after so many complaints, Microsoft uses them to advertise the operating system and to show people that it really listens to their feedback.

The Start menu, however, still comes with some modern elements borrowed from Windows 8, such as the live tiles, which many believe are a waste of time.

Obviously, it all depends on your choice and that’s actually a good thing: in Windows 10, you can choose not only between a Start menu and a Start screen, but you can also remove the live tiles from the Start menu and stick to a simpler layout that’s more or less similar with the one in Windows 7.

In the end, with Windows 10 Microsoft is finally giving users choices, but it’ll still be interesting to see how everyone will receive the new operating system when it launches on July 29.
