The bug only exists on Windows 10 Enterprise

KB4088776 is the cumulative update that Microsoft released this month for systems running Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, and as we reported a couple of days ago, it fails to install on a number of systems for a reason that’s yet to be determined.

On the official KB page, however, Microsoft details one possible reason for KB4088776 failing to install, explaining that it’s aware of an issue caused by previous delta updates.

Specifically, the company says that on Windows 10 Fall Creators Update Enterprise where the January 2017 delta update was installed systems could hit installation issues with the February and March 2018 updates from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Delta updates are a lighter version of cumulative updates that include only the changes made from the previous release and are aimed at systems that are already up-to-date. Standard cumulative updates, on the other hand, come with all improvements for a specific Windows 10 version, and installing the most recent brings systems up-to-date, no matter the previously-installed update.

Install the full cumulative update

In order to deal with this bug, Microsoft has expired Windows 10 version 1709 delta updates released in January, February, and March, and the company says that users should install the full cumulative update instead. A new fix, along with new delta updates, will be released next month.

“Microsoft recommends that users uninstall the Windows 10 version 1709 January KB4056892 Delta Update package and install the March 2018 full latest cumulative update, KB4088776. Customers may resume using Delta Update packages with the April 2018 Windows 10 version 1709 monthly cumulative update,” the company says.

Microsoft hasn’t said anything about the other failed installs reported by users with cumulative update KB4088776, and in the meantime customers are pretty much on their own in their attempt to find a workaround. New cumulative updates possibly fixing these bugs, however, could land later this month.
