Blue light filter not on the roadmap yet, Microsoft says

Windows 10 Mobile devices aren't going to get a blue light filter as part of the feature2 update, Microsoft recently confirmed, finally putting an end to rumors that this feature might be coming to Windows phones with the next update.

Blue light filters are already available across the majority of desktop and mobile platforms, and even Microsoft is offering one on Windows 10 PCs as Night light.

iOS and Android also have a similar blue light filter, and so does macOS, though on all these platforms third-party apps with similar functionality, such as f.lux, are also available. More recently, f.lux was also released in the Windows Store, but only with support for PCs.

Already on PCs with the Creators Update

Microsoft introduced Night light with the release of the Windows 10 Creators Update, but given the declining focus on phones, a similar blue light filter was not available on Windows 10 Mobile as well.

The company suggested that such a feature would be introduced with the next major update, though it now seems like this plan has changed and the company is no longer working on Night light for Windows phones as part of the feature2 release.

The next major update for Windows phones is expected to be based on CShell, a new shell experience that would bring phones and PCs even closer, so there's a good chance that this would be the moment when Night light finally becomes available on smartphones as well.

The bad news is that the existing speculation seems to suggest that the CShell-based mobile overhaul would only be available on new hardware, and not on the existing phone models, which means that only a few users would benefit from the new blue light filter.

Without a doubt, Microsoft needs to set things straight here and provide more information on the future of Windows phones, as it's hard to believe that too many people would wait to see what's coming after the feature2 update and invest in new devices in the meantime.
