Microsoft Edge updated with Acrylic material in latest build

Windows 10 build 16257 was released earlier today with a bunch of improvements and new features, and one tweak that users might not notice at first glance is the addition of Fluent Design in Edge browser.

Acrylic material has made it to the default Windows 10 browser, though at first glance it looks like the blur effect is rather subtle and you really need to look very close to know it’s there.

The Acrylic material effect is more noticeable when expanding the tab bar, as seen in the screenshots in the gallery below, but when using the dark theme, you can barely see it.

“We’re giving Microsoft Edge a refreshed and more modern look in the browser frame, inspired by the Fluent Design System. The use of Acrylic material provides depth and transparency to the tab bar and other controls, and we’ve improved button animations to feel more responsive and delightful,” Microsoft announced in the release notes of the new build today.

More tweaks coming to the browser

Additionally, the company says that it tweaked the design of the address bar to make it easier to edit parts of the URL, while also fixing issues impacting the copying process of images that would paste the link instead of the picture itself.

Then, there’s a fix for a problem affecting tabs running in full screen mode, with Microsoft acknowledging that using CTRL + W to close the tab actually close the content but leave the tab in the frame.

In the meantime, Microsoft Edge has a hard time becoming a more widely-adopted browser, with statistics showing that it remains at 6 percent global market share despite Redmond’s rather aggressive marketing push that included ads on the desktop and popups showing up when changing default browsers.

Microsoft Edge is projected to get new improvements with the release of the Fall Creators Update in September, with today’s tweaks to become available for the production ring when the RTM is finalized.
