Microsoft is replacing Internet Explorer with Edge browser in Windows 10, so the company uses this new app to provide us with another reason to upgrade to the new operating system on July 29, when it becomes available.

As part of the video series called “10 Reasons to Upgrade to Windows 10,” Microsoft first highlighted the Start menu and then Cortana, so Edge is the third reason you have to download and install the new operating system.

“Want a browser that works the way you do? Meet Microsoft Edge–the browser that turns browsing into doing with things like writing directly on webpages, a distraction-free reading mode and many other new features,” the video description reads.

Microsoft Edge in detail

Edge will be offered in Windows 10 as a universal app, so it’ll be available not only on PCs but also on tablets and smartphones, with the exact same look and feature lineup.

The browser comes with a rich feature lineup that includes a new look with a dark theme, a download manager, reading list to save articles for later viewing, several configuration options, including settings to disable Adobe Flash Player, tabs, a home tab, and Cortana integration.

Cortana can help you perform a number of tasks on the go and allows you to use the search features integrated into the address bar to get information, such as the weather forecast, as you type.

Edge will also get support for extensions later this year, but Microsoft is yet to provide any release date for this new option. The company says that Google Chrome extensions will also work on Edge with minor tweaks, but developers will need to apply these tweaks, so it’ll be interesting to see how many of them actually want to port their apps to Windows 10.

Edge will be the default browser in Windows 10, while Internet Explorer will be there for compatibility reasons, as Microsoft warns that some websites might not load correctly because of the new Edge engine.
