Spring hardware event unlikely to bring new Surface Book

Microsoft is unlikely to launch a new Surface Book laptop this spring, according to a new report, as the company is planning a spring hardware event that could bring us other new devices.

While information remains scarce at this point, a report from ZDNet indicates that even though Microsoft is indeed holding a hardware event this spring, there are small chances to actually see the Surface Book 2 going live because the new model isn’t ready just yet.

This means that although the Surface Book 2 does exist, it’s more likely to launch at a later time, possibly in the fall when Microsoft typically introduces upgrades for its Surface devices (this wasn’t the case last year, though, as the company was believed to be planning a spring hardware refresh).

So if the Surface Book 2 isn’t launching at this new hardware event, then what is Microsoft preparing for its customers? The Surface Pro 5, which was supposed to launch alongside the Surface Book 2, is still on the table for a spring 2017 launch, and there’s a good chance that it could indeed see daylight anytime soon.

New Windows 10 laptop?

Additionally, previous reports indicated that Microsoft might be working on a traditional Windows 10 laptop that features the same design as the Surface Book, but without a detachable keyboard and touchscreen support.

Microsoft’s plan here would be to offer a more affordable Windows 10 laptop without compromising hardware performance, but such a device seems rather unlikely given that Microsoft is aiming to invent new product categories every time with its Surface devices.

One thing is for sure, though: there won’t be a Surface Phone at this spring hardware event, with recent speculation indicating that Microsoft could wait until 2018 to take the wraps of this new model device. Of course, everything is just in the rumor stage for now, as Microsoft hasn’t even announced its hardware conference just yet.
