Redmond moves everyone to the THI1 development branch

Windows 10 RTM is expected sometime this month, but Microsoft still plans to release a new testing build to insiders and let them try out the operating system just before the big release on July 29.

Gabriel Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, confirmed yesterday that a new Windows 10 build would be coming, but no other specifics were provided, especially because the company pulled the current builds and ISOs in anticipation of the eagerly awaited RTM.

But now it seems that the company has silently moved all Windows Insiders to a new branch named TH1, which is none other than the one used for testing RTM candidates, and this could be a sign that the next release for users participating in the testing program will be a big one.

As WinBeta notes, it’s easy for everyone to check if their computers have already been moved to TH1. To do that, simply open the Start menu, type “regedit.exe” and navigate to the following path:

code
HKLM>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>WindowsSelfHost>Applicability
Here, simply double-click the “BranchName” entry, and if it reads TH1, then you should be getting either an RTM candidate or the RTM itself when Microsoft pushes out next build.

RTM candidate more likely

As for the chances to get the final RTM build when Microsoft releases the next version, it’s more likely to get a candidate than the final tidbits because the company wants to upgrade insiders to Windows 10 RTM on July 29, the day when the new operating system becomes globally available.

As a result, an RTM candidate could make more sense, but if the company pushes the new build release back for a few more days, the final RTM could very well be released as we would be very close to July 29.

Microsoft continues work on Windows 10 until the very last minute, so plans could still change overnight depending on the issues that the company comes across now.
