Microsoft Edge receives new major update on iOS

Microsoft Edge is one of the apps that are part of Redmond’s iOS offensive, and since it’s still in the early days on Apple’s playground, the browser receives updates at a very fast pace.

Today, for instance, an update for Microsoft Edge on iOS introduces a bunch of fairly important tweaks, including the eagerly-anticipated dark mode. The new theme can be enabled from the settings screen, so make sure you give it a try should you want to get rid of the light mode.

Also, Microsoft says it focused specifically on optimizing battery usage, as a number of testers have complained that Edge on iOS drains battery and causes the iPhone to overheat.

“Some of you told us that your phone heats up or otherwise consumes more battery when you use Edge. We looked under the hood and found a few optimizations. Let us know if you continue to experience high battery consumption,” Microsoft says in the official release notes of the application.

Still in beta stage, not publicly available

There’s also improved left and right swiping to go back and forth between pages, which is a gesture that’s already available in Safari on iPhone and should definitely come in handy to users, as well as several other bugfixes under the hood.

And last but not least, there’s support for actions and activities extensions, such as sharing sites, saving sites to Notes, adding sites to Pocket and others, Microsoft says.

Just like before, Microsoft Edge is available as a beta version for iPhone and it’s not available in the App Store. Users can enroll in the beta program using the TestFlight Apple program, but it goes without saying that Edge should by no means become the daily driver just yet given its beta flag.

There’s no word just yet as to when the Edge browser could make it to the Apple Store, but for the time being, it looks like Microsoft is very committed to bringing new features and fixing bugs in the app as soon as possible.
