Surface Pro hit by weird bug causing unexpected shutdown

The Surface Pro is Microsoft’s most recent rival to Apple’s iPad Pro, and now that Cupertino has launched a new 10.5-inch model, the competition is getting even fiercer, though it looks like not everything is going as planned for the software giant.

The Surface Pro appears to be hitting some unexpected issues for a growing number of customers, as many complain that the device is shutting down randomly without any error or clear issues.

As CW spotted, there are users complaining on both reddit and on Microsoft’s Community forums, but specifics on what exactly is causing the problem and how users can fix it are not available just yet.

“Just picked up the Surface Pro I5 Friday. At random intervals the screen goes black and the device seems to power off while I am actively using it (typing). Pressing the power button presents the black and white windows logo and a few seconds later a login screen with the desktop in the exact setup before the shutdown,” one user explains.

Only a small number of devices affected

A Microsoft employee has already acknowledged the issue, but said that only a small number of customers appear to be affected. He did say, however, that a fix is in the works, though once again no specifics have been provided on when it is supposed to land and whether it is a software or hardware issue.

“We are aware of a small group of customers reporting a scenario with their new Surface Pro in which the device inadvertently hibernates. We are investigating this issue,” the company employee said.

Meanwhile, more and more customers seem tempted to return their Surface Pro tablets, especially because there is only limited information on when a fix could be provided. Microsoft itself is probably investigating as we speak and with Patch Tuesday happening tomorrow, a first attempt at fixing the bug could be shipped soon.
