Microsoft has just released a new firmware update for Surface Book and Surface Pro 4, two of its latest devices that are projected to start shipping this week.

Both the Book and the Pro 4 were officially introduced during the company's October 6 hardware event and are now up for pre-order, with the first units to arrive at customers' doors this week.

So the new firmware version lands just in time for their grand debut, which means that, the moment you get them out of their boxes and prepare for the first run, you should see the update waiting to be installed. And obviously, everyone is recommended to install it as soon as possible because it includes several big improvements, including the addition of Windows Hello.

Hello, Windows Hello!

This feature is specifically introduced in Windows 10 to make biometric authentication possible, and thanks to this new firmware, Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 owners can now use it on their devices as well.

The new firmware version ships as a cumulative update, which means that, once you install it, your device should be brought up to date and no other patches need to be deployed.

Microsoft explains in the description of this version:

“This firmware and driver package contains drivers for all of the components in the Surface Book, as well as updates to the system firmware that have been released via Windows Update. These drivers and firmware are compatible with Windows 10, including Enterprise versions.“

“The driver MSI and ZIP files include all of the drivers and firmware needed to deploy custom images of Windows on your Surface devices. For convenience, the Ethernet dongle drivers are included as separate packages, but are also included in the ZIP and MSI. Additionally, the WinTab driver is provided for those professionals needing WinTab compatibility with certain Surface Pen enabled applications.”

Just as usual, this fresh firmware version is also shipped via Windows Update, so you won't have to spend too much time searching for it, and no additional input other than a one-time click on the install button is needed. But additionally, you can also download and install the update manually using this link for Surface Book and this one for the Surface Pro 4.
