Swipe and Flash improvements already planned

The Windows 10 Anniversary Update, also known by Microsoft enthusiasts as Redstone, will bring a plethora of improvements, including new features for the default Edge browser.

In addition to built-in ad-blocking capabilities, Edge browser is also expected to get several usability enhancementss, some specifically aimed at touch screen devices.

For example, the Anniversary Update will finally bring swipe support for websites in Microsoft Edge, a feature that was available in the Metro version of Internet Explorer in Windows 8.1 but was then removed in Windows 10. This will allow you to simply swipe left and right to navigate back and forward, and this is clearly a welcome improvement on touch-capable devices.

Such a feature already exists in Google Chrome on Windows 10, even though it’s not a universal app, so there’s no doubt that Edge needs it to keep up with competition.

New tab options and improved security

Microsoft will also improve tab options in Edge browser with new options to pin tabs and re-organize them in the tab bar, but also with more settings for the news feed that shows up when opening a new tab.

What’s also very important to note is that the Anniversary Update will be the first version to display Flash Player as a separate process in Edge browser, a feature that should help Microsoft increase the security of its application. Flash can already be disabled in Microsoft Edge, but since it’ll become a separate process, exploits that are directly targeted at it would be less effective when trying to infiltrate into computers running Edge browser.

More details on how Microsoft is working to enhance browser security will be provided as we get closer to the debut of the Anniversary Update.

The new Windows 10 update is expected to land in July, approximately one year after the launch of the core operating system, but specifics are yet to be provided.
