Retail users and insiders are both getting this new build

As we announced earlier today, Microsoft is releasing Windows 10 Mobile build 10586.164, but as compared to the previous build, the company is making it available for both retail users and insiders.

And yet, as far as insiders are concerned, not everyone is getting it, as Microsoft only ships it to devices enrolled in the slow and release preview rings. Fast ring users need to switch to one of these two channels, get the update, and then switch back to their original ring.

Microsoft says that this is a “publishing limitation,” and this behavior will be changed in the coming updates, as work continues on Windows 10 Mobile users.

Nearly identical to .122

In case you’re wondering how come retail users are getting this update without insiders receiving it first, it’s because .164 is essentially the previous .122 version with only minor changes.

“The previously released 10586.122 build is nearly identical to this new .164 build. There are no major feature changes between the two builds. Changes were focused on a few key bug fixes and other required updates to ensure this build was ready to release to Retail users,” Microsoft explains.

“This is a fairly small release overall, but it's important for Insiders to stay up-to-date.”

Microsoft still hasn’t said anything about the release of Windows 10 Mobile, which, according to new reports, should take place as soon as this month. But the fact that this new build is available to retail users as well could be an indication that work on the new OS advances at a fast pace and the March release target could indeed be accurate.

For the moment, however, work on insider builds continues, and users are recommended to update to version .164 too, as it’s believed to be one of the most stable versions of Windows 10 Mobile preview released so far.
