Microsoft has released a new Windows 10 cumulative update for systems running the Fall Creators Update, and the company says that it addresses an important issue affecting USB devices.

First and foremost, it’s worth noting that the new cumulative update KB4090913 pushes OS build number to 16299.251, so when typing winver in the Start menu, this is the info you should see.

On the other hand, Microsoft says that there’s a chance that Windows Update History incorrectly flags KB4090913 as failed to install, so if the Windows version is 16299.251, then everything completed correctly and that’s just bad reporting.

As for the improvements that Microsoft included in cumulative update KB4090913, the company explains the following the official release notes:

“Addresses an issue in which some USB devices and onboard devices, such as a built-in laptop camera, keyboard, or mouse, stop working. This may occur when the Windows Update servicing stack incorrectly skips installing the newer version of some critical drivers in the cumulative update and uninstalls the currently active drivers during maintenance.”

Known issues in cumulative update KB4090913

In addition to the incorrect information offered by Windows Update, there are also three other known issues, one of which is inherited from previous cumulative updates and which blocks systems running antivirus solutions listed as incompatible from receiving new patches.

At the same time, it’s essential to know that some PCs might fail to start after installing cumulative update KB4090913, getting error INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.

“This issue occurs when the windows update servicing stack incorrectly skips installing the newer version of some critical drivers in the cumulative update and uninstalls the currently active drivers during maintenance,” Microsoft explains.

This update is shipped to systems running Windows 10 Fall Creators Update via Windows Update and can also be downloaded from Softpedia here. No other Windows versions are getting cumulative updates today.
