This update is specifically aimed at the Slow ring

Microsoft has just published a new Windows 10 cumulative update, but this time, it’s not aimed at systems in the production ring, but only at computers that are participating in the Windows Insider program and the Slow ring.

Windows 10 cumulative update KB4034450 brings a single fix, as Microsoft wanted to repair a bug causing some laptops to boot to a black screen as soon as possible.

This update replaces KB4022716, which was released in late June with more improvements to devices running the Creators Update.

New build coming soon

Microsoft explains that this new cumulative update is being pushed to Slow ring devices as it continues work on a new build, with the focus on a new update targeting framework bringing builds in staggered phases. This basically means that Microsoft is testing a system similar to the one used for rolling out new feature updates, such as the Windows 10 Creators Update, which devices receive gradually.

“When we release a new Windows 10 Fall Creators Update build to Insiders in the Slow ring, they can wait to be targeted to install the new build, or instead of waiting Insiders can manually check for updates via Windows Update to get the new build,” Dona Sarkar, head of the Windows Insider program, explained.

“We know this is different from our usual ‘everyone at once’ model to the WIP rings, however this testing will provide invaluable insights to ensure this new targeting framework is functioning as expected.”

Just like the other cumulative updates, a reboot will be needed to complete the install. At the time of writing this article, we aren’t aware of any installation issues, and there’s little chance for such a bug to be experienced with this cumulative update given that only one fix is included.

It remains to be seen when Microsoft ships a new build to the Slow ring, but in the meantime, installing this cumulative update is what everyone should do.
