Build part of the Redstone 4 update coming this spring

Microsoft has released a new Redstone 4 build for insiders in the Fast ring, in addition to the first Windows 10 Redstone 5 build shipped earlier today.

Windows 10 build 17101 (RS4) comes with refined emoji, which Microsoft says are based on feedback received from insiders. Furthermore, the emoji search is now available in more languages, including German, Spanish, French, and others.

One more important improvement for those who aren’t necessarily into emoji is the addition of Windows app permissions. With this feature, users can configure which UWP apps are allowed to access the full file system on Windows 10, with all options added to Settings > Privacy > File System Access.

“With this build we’re giving you more control so you can now decide which UWP apps can access your full file system. Particular UWP apps will be granted permission to have broad file system access. This capability will be granted on a per app basis by Microsoft. If a UWP app has the broad file system access restricted capability, you will receive a consent dialog prompting you to accept or deny the request,” Microsoft says.

Public launch in April as version 1803

There are several other OS improvements, but also known issues, and you can check them in full in the change log after the jump.

Windows 10 Redstone 4 is projected to be finalized for insiders as soon as next month, while the public release should take place in April. As a result, Microsoft is now giving Redstone 4 the finishing touches, and last-minute feedback is critical, as it should help the company refine the performance of the OS before the production ring receives it.

In the meantime, work on Redstone 5 has already started with the very first builds shipped as part of the Skip Ahead track, with the release in this case planned for the fall, most likely in October.
