No word on what’s changed in this revised update

Microsoft has silently published a revised version of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 update KB4088875, with not a single word on what exactly has been changed in this new build.

The official KB page of KB4088875 now lists the latest update on April 5, while the official download links from the Microsoft Update Catalog point to a new version published on April 4.

The list of known issues is basically the same as before, so at first glance, it looks like this new version wasn’t released to address a known bug in the update. And with Patch Tuesday beginning next week for the April rollout, this wouldn’t even make sense, unless there was something critical that Microsoft couldn’t afford to wait any longer to fix.

KB4088875 itself has caused several issues on systems where users tried to install it including network adapter issues that have recently been confirmed by Microsoft. The company later shipped update KB4099950 to address these problems.

Patch Tuesday beginning next week

The next patch Tuesday will kick off on April 10, and just like it happens every month, Microsoft will release new updates for Windows 7 as well, including a new monthly rollup – Windows 7 will continue to get such updates until January 2020 when it officially reaches the end of support.

The bugs that are included in KB4088875 could thus be resolved as part of this month’s Patch Tuesday cycle, as all the other hotfixes are expected to be bundled into the new monthly rollup, though it remains to be seen if Microsoft had enough time to diagnose all issues.

In the meantime, systems which are being offered the new version of KB4088875 are recommended to install it, as we’re not aware of any issues caused by the April release by the time of publishing this article.
