New build reportedly shipped to Insider devices

Microsoft has recently shipped a new update for Windows phones enrolled in the Windows Insider program, at a time when nobody expected these devices to receive such goodies anymore.

The software giant itself said the Windows Insider program for phones was discontinued, and yet here’s a new cumulative update that’s specifically aimed at users in the Fast ring.

While this isn’t technically a new build but just a stand-alone update, it’s still something that’s exclusively available for insiders, so there’s now hope that such improvements would continue to be released.

The new cumulative update pushes OS version number to 15254.249, up from 15254.248 on the production ring. The latest update for Windows 10 Mobile devices not enrolled in the Windows Insider program was shipped earlier this week as part of the Patch Tuesday cycle, so there’s a chance that what Microsoft might be trying to do is fix some issues that were originally implemented in this stable update.

Fixing known issue?

There’s no changelog available right now, but as WL speculates, the new cumulative update could be aimed at the PDF bug that Microsoft itself acknowledged in the known issues section of the latest public release.

The broken update caused Microsoft Edge to no longer be capable of opening PDF documents, with Microsoft itself recommending users to download the Reader app from the Store. That’s surprising to say the least since the PDF Reader itself has also been pulled from the Store, but on the other hand, the company does promise to ship additional workarounds and fixes in a new update.

As for the future of Windows phones and the Windows Insider program, don’t expect anything too exciting on this front, as Microsoft is more committed to other projects. There’s still a chance that a new mobile device could launch in the form of Andromeda, and recent reports said such a release could take place in the second half of this year.
