Windows 10 brings new settings that completely change the way OS updates are delivered to computers running it, and while Pro users are actually allowed to defer the new patches released by Microsoft, those who install Home get everything automatically.

And now Microsoft uses the very same approach for Windows 10 IoT, with a newly introduced Pro version coming with options that allow users to defer updates, just like on the PC sibling.

“We are also introducing a new ‘Windows 10 IoT Core Pro’ OEM SKU that provides the ability to defer updates and control distribution of updates through Windows Server Update Services. With these servicing options, we are bringing flexibility for our partners and customers to help meet their servicing needs while helping ensuring their devices are secure and managed,” Billy Anderds, Partner Director Of Program Management, Windows IoT, explains in a post.

The automatic system for Home users

Microsoft says that it decided to make everything automatic for Windows 10 Home users because they are most often consumers who don’t want to spend too much time installing updates.

What’s more, the company explains, some do not have the skills to decide whether an update should be deferred or not, so Windows 10 Home users are getting all updates exactly when they are released.

Some called Home users “Microsoft’s guinea pigs” because this way the company can easily determine whether an update is causing issues or not, but Redmond has promised to thoroughly test every single patch before shipping it to computers.

Windows 10 has evolved to a completely new approach called Windows as a Service, which brings new updates to computers running whenever they are ready, so automatic installs on Home PCs could actually pay off. Cumulative updates for Windows 10 are being released every once in a while with improvements and performance optimizations.
