Microsoft has just released this month’s firmware updates for the Surface Book and the Surface Pro 4, the company’s latest members of the Surface family rolled out in October 2015.

First and foremost, the Surface Book. According to the Surface update history page, this new firmware version updates Microsoft’s drivers for Surface System Aggregator firmware and Surface UEFI, as well as Intel’s drivers for the HD Graphics 520 board and Intel Display Audio.

“Intel(R) HD Graphics 520 driver update (v20.19.15.4409) improves the overall stability of the graphics driver, resolves screen flickering in several popular applications, and cases where the display does not reinitialize correctly after the device resumes from sleep or hibernation,” Microsoft explains.

For those owning a Surface Book with an Nvidia graphics card, there’s also an update for you too, and so is a large collection of Intel drivers for the used hardware, such as the AVStream Camera 2500, the Control Logic, and the CSI2 Host Controller.

What’s also very important is that this new firmware version also brings improvements to Windows Hello, Redmond’s new biometric authentication system that’s exclusively available on Windows 10.

Surface Pro 4 improvements

The Surface Pro 4 has also received a plethora of changes, among which updates to the Surface Embedded Controller Firmware, which includes adjustments to system internal tuning.

The same Intel HD Graphics driver update is available on the SP4 too, and so is the Surface System Aggregator Firmware update version 103.1135.257.0, which “addresses a case where after you resume the Surface Pro 4 device from hibernation and detach the cover, the auto-rotate feature does not work.”

Keep in mind that it’s better to keep your device connected to a charger when installing new firmware because, if the process fails, it could very well brick it. All firmware updates are shipped via Windows Update and require a reboot. Downgrades aren’t possible. You can view the full list of changes in the box below.
