Office companion app goes live in the Microsoft Store

Microsoft continues its Office offensive on Windows 10 with another free app that’s now available from the Microsoft Store.

Simply called Office, the app could make many believe that the software giant may be offering its productivity suite free of charge, but this isn’t the case.

In fact, what Microsoft does is reinvent the original My Office app with a new approach and design, so the purpose of Office is to serve as a companion app that helps you find documents faster.

Furthermore, Office also includes shortcuts to your Office apps, as well as tutorials in order to make the most of the productivity suite.

IT admins are provided with a set of extra tools, like customization for the user experience with custom branding, access to third-party apps using AAD, as well as Microsoft Search for searching across the organization should it be needed.

Support for latest Office products

While the app itself is free, if you want to access your Office apps and documents an Office 365 subscription is still required. It can also be used with Office 2016, Office 2019, or Office Online.

“The Office app keeps track of the most relevant documents to you so you can jump into your work quickly. You can get to the documents you have most recently used, you have pinned for easy access, or that have been shared with you by others. It will even help you find content relevant to you created by colleagues within your organization,” Microsoft explains.

Office will come pre-installed in Windows 10 beginning with the next major feature update for the operating system. This is due in April when Microsoft starts the gradual rollout of the April 2019 Update for Windows 10.

Microsoft hasn’t mentioned whether users would be allowed to uninstall the app, but there’s a chance they would, especially because Office is also available in the Microsoft Store.
