They are categorized into 7-inch, 8-inch, and “large” slates

Microsoft is close to officially releasing the new Windows 10 Mobile operating system, which is why the company is now readying all the information OEMs need in order to come out with new devices as soon as possible.

We reported to you earlier this week about the recommended specs for the upcoming Windows 10 Mobile smartphones, so now let's take a look at what Microsoft recommends to those who want to launch tablets powered by the new platform.

First of all, Microsoft has categorized tablets into three classes: 7-inch, 8-inch and “large” tablets. They have some things in common when it comes to software, but little specs-wise.

For example, tablets in all three categories will come preloaded with Cortana, but only the 7-inch slates will be powered by Windows 10 Mobile, whereas the 8-inch and larger versions will run Windows 10 for desktop editions (Home, Pro, and Enterprise).

USB Type-C port and Miracast are included

It's also worth mentioning that the 7-inch and 8-inch tablets powered by Windows 10 Mobile should pack 1-2GB of RAM and 8-32GB of internal memory. Larger tablets come with at least 4GB of RAM (possibly more) and at least 32GB of storage.

There doesn't seem to be any 7-inch tablet with full HD (1080p) display since Microsoft mentions they will pack screens that should support either 480 x 800 pixels or 720p resolution.

The 8-inch tablets could sport HD (720p) or higher resolution display, while the larger tablets should come with 10.1-inch to 12.5-inch displays that support at least full HD (1080p) resolution.

As expected, the smaller 7-inch tablets should offer the highest battery life (10+ hours), while the 8-inch or larger slates should offer 8+ hours of battery life.

Microsoft also confirms that all tablets powered by Windows 10 will come with front camera, speakers and headphones, but only the 8-inch or larger versions will pack full array microphones.
