Tab preview and extension support coming to the new browser

Internet Explorer is no longer the default Windows browser as Microsoft has introduced Edge, a completely reworked app that comes with a fresh UI, a new engine, and features that are supposed to convince Chrome and Firefox users to jump ship.

That’s not really happening right now, so Microsoft is planning to introduce a bunch of significant updates in the near future that would make Edge a powerful alternative to the other browsers on the market.

As we told you yesterday, Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore demoed tab previews in Edge at Ignite in New Zealand, and during the same event, the company executive also explained that major updates were scheduled to debut for the new browser “really soon.”

Obviously, it’s difficult to decrypt Belfiore’s message, but we already have some info regarding updates that are in the pipeline for Edge and Windows 10.

How soon is “really soon?”

First and foremost, it’s worth knowing that the updates Belfiore is talking about include extension support and tab previews, two features that have already been confirmed by the company itself.

Extension support is one of the key options in Edge browser, as Microsoft is planning to make Chrome extensions work in its new app with little or no modifications at all.

An update for Windows 10, which could also include the new Edge features, is expected in late October or early November, so users have to wait only approximately one month to get their hands on these options. On the other hand, some claim that the October 6 Microsoft event where new hardware will be presented is also likely to witness the debut of Edge improvements.

There’s also a chance to see these new features being rolled out as part of a cumulative update, but this is obviously less likely, given the fact that extension support is one of the biggest improvements Edge could get and Microsoft most likely wants everyone to know about it.
