Redmond's latest Fluent Design video backfires quickly

Microsoft announced Fluent Design (previously codenamed Project NEON) earlier this year, and at least some parts of it are projected to land with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

Since the debut of the new Windows 10 version is just around the corner, Microsoft rolled out a video to highlight the key features of Fluent Design as part of its Windows Developer YouTube channel.

This plan to praise the new design language, however, backfired quickly, as the comment section of the YouTube video has been flooded with messages posted by users who don’t find the new Fluent Design as a major overhaul of the operating system, with some describing it as “a Chinese clone of macOS.”

Even though the Fluent Design project is supposed to substantially improve the Windows 10 experience, only two different elements are ready for now, namely the Acrylic effect and Reveal, which are being demoed in this video as part of universal apps.

Only part of Fluent Design coming in Fall Creators Update

And since the company promised more as part of Fluent Design, the majority of users who posted comments to Microsoft’s video criticized the makeover.

“Just transparency on the existing design? That's not what you promised us,” one user posted. “It's not what I expected. I mean it is, but it's way to inconsistent and still just a bit of blur. There were so many great concepts in the main fluent design video, why didn't you bring in those?” another one continued.

Others describe Microsoft’s Fluent Design as “boring, inspired from macOS, and “ugly,” though there are also several users (not many) who find it pretty good looking.

Fluent Design, however, is expected to be ready in full version with the release of the Windows 10 Redstone 4 update in the spring of 2018. The biggest visual change in the Fall Creators Update takes place in universal apps like Groove Music, Mail and Movies & TV.
