14 DAY TRIAL // Microsoft brought Edge browser extensions on PCs with the release of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update and now everyone’s wondering whether the company plans on launching them on devices running Windows 10 Mobile as well.
A tweet posted by Windows France and removed shortly after that fuels speculation that the company’s working on extensions for Windows 10 Mobile, although until now there’s absolutely no confirmation about this.
“Did you know that Microsoft Edge extensions also exist on Windows 10 Mobile?” Microsoft France tweeted, as AggiornamentiLumia spotted. The tweet was pulled shortly after that, and it’s no wonder why.
First of all, this tweet is nothing but wrong, as Edge extensions do not currently exist on Windows 10 Mobile. Could this be a sign that Microsoft is working on such a feature and someone pressed the go button earlier? Maybe.
Extensions on Windows 10 Mobile
Edge extensions becoming available on Windows 10 Mobile devices is a thing that Microsoft has long planned, as the company announced at BUILD 2015 that such a project was already being considered.
“We first need to bring them on the desktop version of the browser,” Microsoft Edge engineers Sean Lyndersay and Charles Morris said at the BUILD 2015 developer conference. The two have explained that bringing Edge extensions on Windows 10 Mobile devices is harder than on PCs because it’s obviously more difficult to adapt them to smaller screens without compromising performance and battery life.
Right now, it’s not yet clear if and when Microsoft could bring extensions on Windows 10 Mobile devices, but the upcoming Creators Update seems like a good moment. However, given the fact that the company is expected to finalize work on new features for the Creators Update in January and there’s still no sign of extensions on mobile device, this is very unlikely to happen.
