Microsoft doesn’t talk too often about Windows 10 Mobile, but when it does it, the company provides only a few details regarding the release dates or features that might be added in the next updates.

Gabriel Aul, head of the Windows Insider program, posted some new information today, trying to calm down angry testers who have criticized the company for its CIA-like secrecy regarding new Windows 10 Mobile builds, but also for not providing information on the release date of the final OS.

Aul says that work on Windows 10 Mobile advances at the desired pace and explains that the company is still on track to launch the operating system as a free upgrade for Windows Phone devices in early 2016. No other specifics have been provided on the date, though, so there’s still plenty of room for speculations.

“We’re still on track to release Windows 10 as an upgrade to existing devices early this year as we planned. The team is working now by looking at data and reports from Insiders who have upgraded their devices to preview builds, and ensuring that we deliver a great upgrade experience to customers. We’re excited about making the upgrade available, and will share new information with you just as soon as we can on how the rollout will happen,” Aul said.

New Lumia models to get preview builds first

At the same time, Aul also revealed that the future Windows 10 Mobile preview builds would be first shipped to new Lumia devices, such as 950, 950 XL, and 550.

Once the new builds arrive on these models, more devices could get them from there, but once again, no details on when these updates could land were provided.

But Gabe Aul says that the Windows team is very close to rolling out a new Windows 10 Mobile build, so if we’re lucky enough, we could get our hands on it as soon as tomorrow.
