3D modelling taken to a completely new level with HoloLens

Everyone heard of HoloLens, Microsoft’s revolutionary device that finally brings holograms in our lives, but as the company continues its development, it creates new ways to interact with these holograms and change how we work.

At WPC 2015, Microsoft demoed Autodesk Maya 3D integration with HoloLens, which basically takes 3D modelling to a completely new level and provides us with an unprecedented way of working with 3D models.

Microsoft says that working with 3D prints is indeed a very effective way to improve designs, but since they’re so pricey, a device like HoloLens can really come in handy.

View changes in a real-life environment

Basically, when you are working in Autodesk Maya, the model you are currently designing can also be represented virtually with a hologram, with plenty of options letting you move it on your desk, rotate or zoom it to view absolutely all details at a bigger scale.

All changes that you make in Maya are instantly applied to your hologram, and you can easily control it with your mouse to view every single modification no matter its place.

And that’s not all. HoloLens allows you to view not only holograms but also real objects around you, so for example, Autodesk software lets you overlay the virtual model on the actual object to see every single change in a real-life environment. Collaboration features are also being offered to make it extremely easy to work on the same project at the same time, either from the same location or from different places.

Needless to say, such capabilities open a completely new world of opportunities, and 3D modelling will definitely be significantly improved thanks to HoloLens. Just imagine how easy it could be for carmakers to design and refine new models if such technology reaches the market, so there’s no doubt that Microsoft needs to continue this amazing project and bring even more improvements before making it available for everyone.
