Microsoft has already announced firmware updates for some Windows 10 Mobile devices, including Lumia 950 and 950 XL, but also for a couple of Windows Phone 8.1 phones, and now the company says that more firmware releases are scheduled to take place in the near future.

In a statement for Neowin, Microsoft explains that devices still running Windows Phone 8.1 will receive firmware updates to prepare them for the upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile, thus confirming not only that new firmware versions are just around the corner but also that the new OS version is on its way to old Lumia devices.

Furthermore, Microsoft emphasizes that, without these firmware updates, it will be impossible to move to Windows 10 Mobile, so it recommends users to keep their devices fully up to date.

Windows 10 Mobile upgrade on February 29?

Previously, firmware updates were bundled into OS updates, but Microsoft seems to be changing this approach for Windows 10 Mobile.

“For existing 8.1 devices, Win10 update is going to be only SW update, but in order to fix few issue, there will be FW updates for some devices which are still based on 8.1 SW before they can receive Win10 update. Right now we have not communicated what 8.1 devices will get updated and when but please have the latest SW on all your 8.1 in preparation of win 10,” the statement reads.

Microsoft hasn’t mentioned the models to get the firmware updates, but it has suggested that these releases could take place very soon. Previously, Microsoft Mexico revealed in a Facebook post that the Windows 10 Mobile would start on February 29, and if this continues to be the case, then these new firmware updates could launch in just a few days.

Certainly, there are more details to be disclosed by Microsoft before the Windows 10 Mobile begins, so expect additional information on Windows Phone devices that will get the upgrade.
