What if Microsoft started making edge phones?

While we are waiting for Microsoft to pull the veil off the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, some concept phone designers are already looking far beyond what the immediate future will bring us.

For example, designer Abhishek Saini is showing us his vision of what some day might be the Lumia 965 model. And even if Windows 10 Mobile is not yet officially out and about, the creator of these renders sees the Lumia 965 as arriving with Windows 11 on board.

And there’s another particularity to this concept. Samsung was the first device maker (and so far the only one) to unveil a smartphone with an edge display back at IFA 2014, in the form of the Galaxy Note Edge.

Even if the handset was merely an experiment, since then, Samsung has pushed out two more models featuring the same design. And now it seems that other device makers, like Xiaomi, Huawei or LG, are looking to follow suit and release alternatives of their own.

Imagining the Microsoft Lumia 965

But what if Microsoft decided to make an edge phone too? Well, the Lumia 965 is a possible answer to this question. The device is envisioned as coming with a 5.5-inch display with QHD resolution (2560 x 1440 pixels), but who knows, by the time Windows 11 becomes the norm, phones with 4K displays might become a pretty common affair. Remember that the world’s first 4K handset, the Xperia Z5 Premium, made a debut not so long ago.

Other specifications include an octa-core processor clocked at 2GHz, 3GB of RAM, and 128GB of built-in storage. On the imaging front, we’re told there’s a 21MP main snapper plus an 8MP frontal shooter.

There is no microSD card slot, and the 3,630 mAh battery unit is non-removable. The phone boasts an overall metallic look, and the designer is showing us multiple versions of the device in different coloring options.

Last but not least, for those who have a predilection for BlackBerry keyboards, the Lumia 965 concept includes a QWERTY keypad that should help users with texting and composing emails.

Basically, the Lumia 965 is a mash-up of many features borrowed from different device makers. Would it work in real life?
