Lumia 950 XL posts great 3G talk time, but both smartphones underperform on standby battery times with up to 7 days

If you've been wondering whether Microsoft's latest Windows 10-powered smartphones could offer you better battery life than other flagship smartphones available on the market, then you will probably be disappointed.

Although they are close behind other flagships like Galaxy S6 or iPhone 6S in some tests, you shouldn't expect any miracles from either of them.

Obviously, the Lumia 950 XL performs much better than the Lumia 950 since it packs a 3,340 mAh battery, whereas the former comes with a slightly lower 3,000 mAh battery inside.

Still, considering the Lumia 950 sports a much smaller 5.2-inch display and the Lumia 950 XL boasts a larger 5.7-inch touchscreen (with similar Quad HD resolution), results shouldn't be much different in some tests.

According to GSMArena, the Lumia 950 XL posted way-above-average results when it comes to endurance on the 3G talk time: 17 hours. On the other hand, Lumia 950 was a bit disappointing, with almost half that time: 8:25 hours.

In the web browsing test, Microsoft Lumia 950 lasted only 7 hours and 29 minutes while the Lumia 950 XL posted a much higher result: 10 hours and 50 minutes. That's only 6 minutes shorter than Galaxy S6's result, which comes with a much lower 2,550 mAh battery.

Moving on to the video playback test, the Lumia 950 XL lasted for 10 hours and 38 minutes, only 3 minutes short of Samsung Galaxy Note edge. In comparison, Lumia 950 lasted only 9 hours and 40 minutes, which is pretty decent.

Hopefully, some optimization on Microsoft's part will increase battery life

The problem is both smartphones underperformed in their battery standby times, as they only lasted for about 7 days on a single charge.

Last but not least, in day-to-day use, Lumia 950 should last you about 2 days with one hour of calling, one hour of browsing and one hour of video playback per day.

On the other hand, Lumia 950 XL posted a 62-hour battery life on the endurance test, which means that in real life you should be able to use it for more than 2 days in similar conditions.

The result might look impressive at a first glance, but it's no match for other phablets available on the market (Samsung Galaxy Note 5 scored 85 hours on endurance test).

We're preparing our own Lumia 950 XL review, which should be published sometime during next week, but if you want to read our first impressions, feel free to check it out and post your comments.
