The new phones don't yet have the final version of the OS

Microsoft launched the new Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL phones at yesterday's event and now everyone's waiting for the company to start shipping them because this basically represents the fastest way to get their hands on the new Windows 10 Mobile operating system.

And yet, it turns out that the two Lumias are currently running a preview build of Windows 10 Mobile and the demo that Microsoft has offered at the event was on devices running this pre-release version of the operating system.

Most likely, it's an improved version of the one that insiders are currently running (and which they could get sometime in the near future), but it's a sign that the RTM isn't ready yet.

Still, it turns out that Microsoft plans to finalize work on Windows 10 Mobile this month, so next month when the new Lumias will ship, they will come with a newer version.

Windows 10 Mobile RTM coming in December

@gcaweir tweeted that Microsoft already confirmed that “Lumia 550, 950 and 950 XL will ship with a different build, not Windows 10 Mobile Preview 10546,” which is already newer than the last version of the operating system shipped to insiders.

Microsoft previously hinted that it could launch Windows 10 Mobile build 10559 sometime this week, but more information on the next version should be provided in just a few days as the company prepares the release.

In the meantime, it turns out that Windows 10 Mobile will launch in December, but that's only the month when the rollout will begin, as Microsoft's going for staggered debut. Only a few devices will get it at first, so many will actually receive the upgrade in 2016, as carriers test the new OS on their phones.

In the end, all Windows Phone handsets will get the upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile, but the big question right now is how soon this will actually happen.
