Microsoft is planning to release new flagships this year, but the rumor mill has been torn when it comes to the naming scheme Redmond will use.

Initially, we were told that Microsoft was looking to release the Lumia 940 and Lumia 940 XL models, but then word came out that the company could be skipping a step and going directly to the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL.

Now, a new report coming out of NPU says that Microsoft will in fact stick with the Lumia 940 and Lumia 940 XL nomenclature. On top of that, we’re told the Lumia 840 is also in the cards. The device will be released towards the end of the year, after the Lumia 940 and Lumia 940 XL have a chance to be shown to the world.

Furthermore, all three models will come boasting on-screen touch buttons and not capacitive touch buttons.

The Lumia 940 smartphone is expected to arrive in the wild with a 5.2-inch capacitive touchscreen display with support for Quad HD (2560 x 1440 pixel resolution).

Furthermore, the Microsoft Lumia 940 will be equipped with a hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal memory with support for microSD expansion (up to 128GB).

On the back, there’s a 20MP photo snapper with autofocus, triple LED flash and video recording, while in the front will live a 5MP selfie camera.

The Lumia 940 XL will arrive with a larger 5.7-inch QHD display and will bundle a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor with 3GB of RAM. The flagship handset will pack 32GB of internal memory with support for microSD expansion (up to 128GB).

The phone will arrive with a similar 20MP rear-facing camera with autofocus, video recording and triple LED flash, while the selfie camera will be a unit of 5MP capacity.

As for the Lumia 840, the phone has had a mixed track history. According to the current sources, the device does exist, and albeit hearing reports that it has been canceled, it appears the phone will actually be revealed by the end of the year.
