Microsoft is working to overhaul its mobile phone lineup with new devices later this year, but in the meantime, its existing models are still winning the hearts of new buyers across the whole world.

But as far as the United States market is concerned, there's one device that performs a lot better than the others. Lumia 640 adoption skyrocketed, according to data provided by AdDuplex, with this particular model now the second most popular Windows Phone device in the country.

Lumia 635 continues to lead the charts with a share of 31.4 percent, but Lumia 640 managed to increase its market share by no less than 3.2 percent last month.

As far as the global market share is concerned, the low-end Lumia 520 continues to be the leader with 17.2 percent, followed by Lumia 630 with 9.4 percent. Lumia 535 comes next with 9 percent. Flagships such as the Lumia 930 and Lumia 1520 are nowhere to be seen in these charts.

Windows 10 Mobile gains ground

The good news for Microsoft is that Windows 10 Mobile interest is already growing, despite the fact that the operating system isn't yet here, but only available in preview stage.

Worldwide, Windows 10 Mobile is installed on 3.3 percent of all Windows phones, while Windows Phone 8.1 obviously remains number one with a share of 78.1 percent. Windows Phone 8.0 still powers 11.8 percent of the devices, followed by Windows Phone 7.x with 6.8 percent.

Windows 10 is up 0.7 percent, according to these figures, while Windows Phone 8.1's share is unchanged from the previous month.

Nokia and Microsoft are obviously the top manufacturers of Windows Phone devices, with 96.81 percent of the devices currently on the market belonging to them, while HTC is second with 1.41 percent. Samsung is third with 0.65 percent, followed by Huawei with 0.36 percent.

Microsoft hopes this could change with the arrival of Windows 10 Mobile, but just like the company's CEO Satya Nadella said, “we'll build our own devices if no one else wants to.”
